A while back I watched the 1983 TVB production of Louis Cha’s ‘神鵰俠侶/ Return of the Condor Heroes‘ (starring a young, impossibly pretty Andy Lau in case you might like that sort of thing). I enjoyed the shit out of it, as they say in academic circles.
Hero Andy encounters all kinds of eccentric bad ass characters in this series. Sometimes there’s a reason for their meeting and sometimes not. Who cares; they’re great characters anyway. In this particular series, so many great Hong Kong actors make sudden brief appearances (sometimes more than once). Awesome cameos AND wuxia? Heck yeah.
In episode 24, Hero Andy is walking down the road when one of my favorite 80’s supporting actors, Alan Chan Kwok Kuen, suddenly falls out of a nearby tree and introduces himself.
That is a really awesome goal. Why doesn’t anybody ever fall out of a tree and immediately start sharing their dreams with me? If it did happen, I’d certainly look more impressed or startled than Andy Lau. I would also offer to help Knight Ma because I too want to kill all the rascals in the world.
I was pretty sad when I finished watching the whole thing. I actually suffered a bit of post-series depression. Who can recommend other classic wuxia series? Hit me!
